H,

It is not right to think so on any level. I do not think that we sit in judgement over the conduct or misfortune of any other human being. We are not even allowed the luxury of judging ourselves. God sits in judgement over everyone, at the end. That is the real standard and the real guiding line.

We cannot be at ease with the systems of this world. We cannot accept that as the rule over who people are and what they do. It is not enough and it perhaps a bit too lazy to say that those who suffer should have taken a left instead of a right. This world does not lend itself to the simple philosophies of self-sufficiency (even when we label, in abject silliness, “self-sufficiency in God”). It will break into everyone eventually. We are told to take care of each other for precisely this reason.

We will fall down. If we are any good at it we will fall down many times. It is right that we have a hand to pull us back up again. In the marathon race that is our faith, sometimes the face of God is the hand of a friend.
